Chapter 25

Jake looked up when Merilee knocked on his door.

“There’s someone here from Veterinary Services to see you,” she said.

“Send him in,” Jake said as he closed his journal. He reached out a hand toward the man. “I’m Jake.”

“Coleman. I thought I’d stop by and see how things were going.”

Belle grumbled. Jake introduced his dogs. “Would you like a tour?”

“Absolutely.”

Jake got the feeling that Coleman wasn’t being entirely open with him. But he also knew that Veterinary Services was far away and only got monthly reports on the complicated situation here. They were probably curious about his progress. There was also Clyde’s lame threat, but Jake wasn’t worried about whatever he might complain about.

He took Coleman through the exam rooms, the surgery and on to the quiet rooms. And all along the way he was interrupted by students with questions.

“Jake, horse versus barbed wire just came in,” Garden called from down the hall.

“Be right there,” Jake answered. “Care to observe?” Jake asked Coleman.

“That would be great.”

Jake took him to the large animal intake area. “Who’s on large animals this week?” he asked as he entered the room.

“We’re all here,” Garden said.

Jake approached the injured horse carefully. The owner had a tight hold on the halter. Jake got their names and reassured the owner it would be okay. “Ease up on the halter,” he said. “Brownie needs some slack.” He patted the animal gently talking softly. He called Garden and Jumbo to do the diagnosis. Brownie had ragged wounds across his shoulder and chest. He directed the cleaning and stitching of the cuts. Then he had them check Brownie’s feet.

When the wounds were cared for, Jake sent the horse to one of the quiet rooms. “Let him rest for a day. You can have him back tomorrow.”

“When can he haul?” The man asked. “He’s my main cart horse.”

“Not for awhile. Those wounds need to heal before you can put a harness back on him.”

“How am I supposed to do deliveries?” the man snapped. “I’ve got milk cans to get out.”

“I might be able to lend you a horse for awhile,” Jake offered.

“Really?” The man’s entire aspect changed. His anger fell away, and Jake could see the concern underneath. “That would make a big difference.”

Jake led the way out to the field. The home herd was grazing at one end.

“You’ve got those fancy horses.”

“Yes. Some are retired, and some are in training. How are you with youngsters?”

The man shook his head. “I don’t have the time, to be honest.”

“Give me a minute.” Jake said as he walked out to the herd. First, he greeted Thunder. The old horse was getting very gray around the muzzle, but he still ruled the herd. Tinker and Ulysses nickered a greeting. He spoke to them explaining what he needed. Blaze was nearby and seemed interested. Jake asked him to come over to meet the man.

Brownie’s owner stared at the big horse. “He’s a beauty.”

Blaze snorted.

“He’s willing to work for you for a few days while Brownie heals up.
